Bright future for multi-billion optical sorting market

The worldwide optical sorter market will be worth at least US$ 3 billion (EUR 2.6 billion) by 2024, according to Global Market Insights. ‘The rising focus on automation to increase the productivity will provide an impetus to the optical sorter market,’ analysts state in a new report.

In Europe, demand for optical sorters will grow more than 9% by 2024, mostly because of the rapid generation of e-scrap, which constitutes the fastest-growing waste stream on the continent.

Modern-day sorting solutions employ advanced image-processing software and high-speed cameras to scan and sort materials more quickly, Global Market Insights observes. An example given is German firm ANDRITZ MeWa which has recently built a dedicated e-scrap recycling plant in the UK. The state-of-the-art site is equipped with the latest Sesotec optical sorters to process computers, refrigerators, and many other products.

Sorting technology is seen as being ‘extremely important’ for solid wastes within the recycling industry at a time of high demand for secondary resources and consumer products.

‘Rising labour costs are compelling several industries to implement sorting systems to perform critical and time-consuming tasks,’ the report states. ‘Recycling plant operators can package and disperse a high amount of materials by implementing the technology in busy facilities, thereby driving the optical sorter market demand,’ it adds.

Key players mentioned in the detailed 213-page report include: Tomra Systems ASA, Steinert GmbH, Sesotec GmbH, Satake Corporation, Raytec Vision SpA, Pellenc ST, Newtec A/S, National Recovery Technologies LLC, Key Technology, Inc., Greefa Italia GmbH, CP Manufacturing, Inc., Buhler AG, Binder + Co AG, Allgaier Werke GmbH and A/S Cimbria.
