Denmark-headquartered consulting group, Cowi, has been appointed by Maltese government-owned Wasteserv Malta Ltd to provide client consultancy services for the early study phases to project execution in support of a new energy-efficient waste incineration plant proposed for Malta.

With an expected annual capacity of 200,000 tonnes, the new plant will tackle the 218,000 tonnes of waste a year on the Mediterranean island.

The appointment will cover technical, legal and financial consultancy; management of the tender process based on competitive dialogue; preparation of specifications, tender documents and public-private partnership models; DBFO/DBO contracting; as well as consultancy assistance during the design and construction phases.

Cowi business development director in industry and energy, Kasper Fröhlich, commented: «Cowi is a global leader in waste management, and we have years of domestic experience in CHP production and waste incineration. When we combine that experience with our engineering, architectonic, legal, economic and planning competencies, we provide a unique 360-degree approach to major, international waste incineration projects.»

COWI has worked on a range of international waste incineration plants including locations in the Philippines, Trinidad and Singapore; it is also involved in a number of international biomass projects in Africa.
