IHE Delft, La Escuela Colombiana de Ingeniería Julio Garavito, The Nature Conservancy Council and Stockholm Environment Institute have joined forces to create an open competition to create sustainable solutions for managing Colombia’s largest river, the Magdalena.
The Connect with the Magdalena River project aims to bring together professionals from engineering, artificial intelligence and design, and from science, environment and technology, to collaborate on developing new tools and technologies for managing this critical river basin.
Teams – which can involve a maximum of three team members – have until March 31 to create a conceptual model for simulating integrated water resource management (IWRM) in the Magdalena basin. Participants have the chance to win a cash award (200 EUR), a place on IHE Delft’s short course on Environmental Data Science – Hydrological Modelling, and to move into Phase 2 of the competition.
Phase 2 of the competition ends June 5 2020 and involves the design and development of a web application, mobile application, videogame or technical tool that contributes to the IWRM of the Magdalena river basin. Participants in Phase 2 have the chance to win a cash award (600 EUR).
Problems to be addressed include:
- Estimating water quality and water use
- Dynamics of water availability
- Water awareness among different stakeholders
- Decision-making for water management – including hydroelectric use
- Water-use efficiency
- Rain analysis and quantification of extreme impacts
