HP debuts first PC made using ocean-bound Plastics

Electronics manufacturer HP has released a new PC partly made from ‘ocean-bound’ plastics.

The HP Elite Dragonfly notebook, claimed to be the world’s first notebook made with ocean-bound plastics, uses 50% post-consumer recycled plastic in its speaker compartment which includes 5% ocean-bound plastics

These plastics have been collected through a partnership with HP, Thread International and Work in Haiti, which has led to the upcycling of more than £1m of ocean-bound plastic bottles.

This has created more than 1,100 income opportunities for adults in the country and provided 150 children with education, food and medical assistance.

HP said it intends to scale up its use of ocean-bound plastic material in all new HP Elite and HP pro desktop and notebook computers launching in 2020.

The manufacturer will also invest a further $2m (£1.6m) in recycling infrastructure to increase its ocean-bound plastic supply chain.

Ellen Jackowski, global head of sustainability and strategy at HP, said: “We’ve been using recycled content in our products for over a decade and our thrilled to hit yet another milestone in our efforts to protect our planet and our oceans.
