MiAlgae, a student-launched start up, is growing algae to use as feed for farmed fish and livestock. The algae is grown in large stainless steel tanks using wastewater from the local whisky industry. The finished product is designed to be used as supplement in feed due to its high content of essential fatty acids and proteins.
So what?
The start-up’s circular model has reduced the operating costs normally associated with the production of this product, allowing it to be offered at a lower price compared to other supplements. The use of water from another industrial process not only boosts its sustainability credentials, but could make it a more resilient product in the face of water shortages.
