Double takeover by Heidelberg in the UK

The British arm of Heidelberg Materials has acquired B&A Group, a construction soil and aggregate recycling company in south-west England.

Bristol-based B&A employs 70 people and specialises in the supply of recycled and primary aggregate as well as site clearance, earthworks, land remediation and sustainable land regeneration.

Heidelberg Materials ceo Simon Willis says: ‘B&A Group is a successful business with an unrivalled reputation in the south-west, underpinned by a strong team. It is an exciting opportunity for us, and I am looking forward to working with the B&A Group to grow the business further.’

Regulator approval

In early May, the company also completed the acquisition recycling company Mick George following approval from the national competition regulator.

Mick George specialises in recycling and waste management services and operates around 40 recycling facilities, waste transfer stations, aggregate quarries and ready-mixed concrete plants in East Anglia and the East Midlands.

Heidelberg says the acquisition adds a substantial recycling platform to its portfolio, supporting the development of innovative technologies for processing waste and upgrading it for use in the construction cycle as a valuable material.

Circular alternatives

Willis adds: ‘It will allow us to drive the use of recycled aggregate in building materials and help us reach our target to offer circular alternatives for half of our concrete products by 2030.’

The UK company is part of Heidelberg Materials, one of the world’s largest integrated manufacturers of building materials and solutions with leading market positions in cement, aggregates, and ready-mixed concrete.

In the UK, it is split into five business lines – aggregates (crushed rock, sand and gravel), concrete, asphalt and contracting, cement and recycling – with around 280 manufacturing and distribution sites and employing more than 3 500 people.
