A solution to recycling rigid polyurethane (PU) and polyisocyanurate (PIR) foams – materials mostly used in building insulation, fridges and furniture applications is being presented as a ‘game-changer’.

The solution is based on a natural polymer found in plants and a by-product of the paper industry.

Traditional disposal methods, including landfill and incineration, have serious environmental drawbacks. The complex chemical structure of PU and PIR foams has made them resistant to conventional recycling techniques, leaving the industry with few viable options for responsible treatment.

Quality boost

But a new process, developed by the Hungarian Purman company, uses lignin – a natural polymer found in plants and a by-product of the paper industry – as a binder in the recycling process. This method not only makes recycling foams more feasible but also enhances the quality of the recycled product.

Lignin acts as a glue, binding foam particles together without the need for high temperatures, thereby reducing energy consumption and the overall carbon footprint of the recycling process.

Broad applications

The use of lignin not only improves the strength and durability of the recycled foam but also broadens its potential applications. The recycled product is suitable for use in a variety of applications, from insulation panels in buildings to components in furniture, making it a versatile solution in many industries.
